The studio is a terrain of form-building, an intimate den where the creative process moves,
slips, and evolves within the expanded time of research. The exhibition, by contrast, unfolds in counterpoint,
like a snapshot of still images, offered up for viewing and reflection.
Where could the in-between of these two tempos reside? How might they merge, intertwine?

Octavia E. Butler was the first African American author to make science fiction her career. Feminist and visionary, she was born in 1947 and died in 2006.
Her archives are held in the Huntington Library (San Marino, Los Angeles)

STATEMENT
(EN)At the crossroads of photography, sculpture, video and installation, my productions are crossed by the throbbing question of history and the memory of images. These montages, built by time anachronisms, ask the question of the recurrence of the image, its survival and its absence. This memory is embodied in elements of heritage, the great collective heritage, that of the wide Mediterranean basin, space that for years has underpinned my research. I walk through the forms of representation of this basin from ancient times to the present day: a place of circulation where the civilizations of classical Greek and Roman antiquity developed and flourished; a place of circulation that is now plagued by a completely different destiny. We inhabit a world that others have inhabited before; we tread a ground designed, architectured by the strata of history that compose it. Between this history and today, the landscape has been created, destroyed, rebuilt. I’m interested in this point of friction, this moment when the wave carries the foam on the shore then joined by a new wave and so on ...
(FR) À la croisée de la photographie, de la sculpture, de la vidéo et de l’installation, mes productions sont traversées par la question lancinante de l’Histoire et de la mémoire des images. Ces montages, construits par anachronismes temporels, posent la question de la récurrence de l’image, de sa survivance et de son absence. Cette mémoire s’incarne dans des éléments du patrimoine, le grand héritage collectif, celui du bassin méditerranéen large, espace qui depuis des années sous-tend ma recherche. Je traverse les formes de représentation de ce bassin depuis l’antiquité jusqu’à nos jours : lieu des circulations où se développèrent et s’épanouirent les civilisations de l’antiquité classique grecque et romaine; lieu de circulation aujourd’hui en proie à un tout autre destin. Nous habitons un monde que d’autres ont habité auparavant ; nous foulons un sol dessiné, architecturé par les strates d’histoire qui le composent. Entre cette histoire et notre aujourd’hui, le paysage s’est composé, détruit, reconstruit. Je m’intéresse à ce point de friction, ce moment où la vague porte l’écume sur la rive alors rejointe par une nouvelle vague et ainsi de suite…
